Printing Photos at Home in Pakistan
Wedding albums, school projects, passport-size photos for forms: many families want to print photos at home. Whether that works depends almost entirely on the type of printer and the paper you feed it.
Ink tank vs laser for photos
| Ink tank (Epson, Canon, HP) | Colour laser | Mono laser | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo quality | Good on glossy photo paper | Fine for charts, flat for photos | Black and white only |
| Photo paper | Inkjet glossy and matte | Laser-rated paper only | Not for photos |
| Best for | Family photos, projects | Office colour documents | Text documents |
Ink tank printers spray tiny droplets that soak into a coated photo paper, which gives smooth tones. A colour laser fuses powder toner with heat — excellent for colour documents and charts, but photos come out flatter. Never put inkjet glossy photo paper into a laser printer: its coating is not made for the fuser's heat and can melt or jam inside. If photos matter, read our best ink tank printer guide.
Which photo paper to buy
- Glossy photo paper for prints and albums; matte for a softer look with no glare.
- 4R (4 × 6 inch) packs are the standard photo size; A4 sheets let you print several small photos at once.
- Heavier paper (around 180–260 gsm) feels like a studio print and curls less. Feed photo paper from the rear tray on Epson L-series and Canon G-series ink tanks.
- Load it the right way up: the printable side is the shiny or brighter side.
Driver settings that make the difference
- Paper type: choose the photo paper type you loaded (for example Epson Premium Glossy, Canon Glossy Photo Paper). On Plain paper settings the printer lays down less ink and photos look washed out; on the wrong glossy setting they can smudge.
- Quality: High or Best for photos (it is slower — that's normal).
- Paper size: 4 × 6 in or A4 to match what is in the tray.
- Borderless: only some models and paper sizes support it. If the driver offers it, tick it; otherwise you'll get a thin white border.
- Let prints dry for a few minutes before stacking, and keep them out of direct sunlight — dye-based ink tank inks fade faster in sun than studio prints.
Passport-size and ID photos
You can print a sheet of passport-size photos for school forms, job applications and society cards at home. Crop the photo to the size the office asks for — 35 × 45 mm is common in Pakistan — then use the Windows Photos print dialog's wallet or multiple-photo layouts, or a Word table with fixed cell sizes, to fit eight or more on one 4R or A4 sheet. Use a plain light background and even light. Government offices that capture your photo themselves, such as passport and CNIC counters, don't need a printed photo at all; for applications that do, follow the exact size and background the form specifies.
What a home photo really costs
On an ink tank, the ink for one 4 × 6 photo is a small share of the cost — the photo paper is most of it. If you print dozens of photos a month, home printing pays off and is far more convenient. If you print five photos at Eid, a photo studio in Saddar, Commercial Market or Blue Area will match the price with better paper. The calculation for documents is different; our cost per page calculator handles that.
Our picks for photos
The Epson EcoTank L3250 adds Wi-Fi so you print straight from a phone; the Canon PIXMA G2010 is the simpler USB option; the HP Smart Tank 585 comes brand new with an official warranty. The differences between the Epson models are in our L3110 vs L3150 vs L3210 vs L3250 comparison.
Print one photo a week, or a nozzle check, to keep an ink tank's print head flowing. Photos are where a partly clogged head shows first — as lines across the sky.

Frequently asked questions
Which printer is best for printing photos at home in Pakistan?
An ink tank all-in-one such as the Epson EcoTank L3250, Epson L3210 or Canon PIXMA G2010, used on glossy photo paper with the matching paper type selected in the driver.
Can a laser printer print photos?
A colour laser can print photos on plain or laser-rated paper, but they look flatter than inkjet prints. Never use inkjet photo paper in a laser printer — the coating can melt in the fuser.
Why do my printed photos look dull or smudged?
Usually the driver's paper type doesn't match the paper loaded, or quality is set to Standard. Select the photo paper type and High quality, and let prints dry before stacking.
Can I print passport size photos at home?
Yes. Crop the photo to the size the form asks for (35 × 45 mm is common), use a multiple-photo layout to fit several on one sheet of glossy photo paper, and use a plain light background.
