HP LaserJet Enterprise M507 vs M608 vs Pro M404dn

If you ask us for an office mono laser in Rawalpindi or Islamabad, the answer is one of three machines: the LaserJet Pro M404dn, the Enterprise M507 or the Enterprise M608. They print the same crisp black text and share the same basic features — automatic duplex, Ethernet, legal support. What separates them is volume: how many pages each is built to print a month, and what each of those pages costs in toner. Here is the honest comparison, based on the units that come through our workshop.

HP LaserJet Pro M404dn: the small-office standard

The M404dn is compact, quick and cheap to run for its size — 38 ppm, a 250-sheet tray, automatic duplex and the 59X high-yield cartridge. It is the right printer for a 3–10 person office printing up to a few thousand pages a month, for a chamber, clinic or school office, and for anyone who wants an enterprise-grade engine on a desk. Its limits are the tray size and the cartridge: past a few thousand pages a month you will be feeding it paper and changing toner more often than you would like. HP LaserJet Enterprise M507: the mid-volume workhorse

Step up to the M507 and you get a 550-sheet tray, a 150,000-page monthly duty cycle, a sturdier paper path and the 89-series cartridges. The 89Y prints around twenty thousand pages, which halves the per-page toner cost against the M404dn's 59X. For a busy office, a school, an NGO or a bank branch printing 3,000–15,000 pages a month, the M507 costs less to own than two M404dns and needs less attention. It is quieter than its size suggests and takes an optional second 550-sheet tray for legal-and-A4 setups.

HP LaserJet Enterprise M608: volume and print shops

The M608 is HP's high-volume A4 mono engine: 61 ppm, a 275,000-page monthly duty cycle, and the 37-series cartridges whose 37Y prints around forty thousand pages. That combination makes it the cheapest per page of the three by a wide margin, and the machine to buy when a photocopy shop, a printing press, a large school or a head office wants to run tens of thousands of pages a month without a photocopier's price tag — our photocopy machine vs laser MFP guide has that comparison. Cost per page: the number that decides it

Divide the cartridge price by its yield and the ranking is clear: 59X on the M404dn costs the most per page, 89Y on the M507 roughly half of that, and 37Y on the M608 less again. At 1,000 pages a month the difference is pocket money and the M404dn wins on price and footprint; at 10,000 pages a month the M608's toner saving alone repays its higher purchase price within a few months. Maintenance and lifespan

All three are long-lived, but the enterprise models are designed around maintenance kits (fuser, rollers, transfer roller) replaced every couple of hundred thousand pages, so a well-serviced M507 or M608 keeps going far beyond an M404dn's design life. Which one should you buy?

• Up to about 3,000 pages a month, desk space matters, budget matters: M404dn (or the M402dne to save more).
• 3,000–15,000 pages a month, or many users on one printer: M507.
• Above that, a print shop, or the lowest possible cost per page: M608.
