HP LaserJet Pro M404dn vs M402dne vs M401dn vs P2055dn

If you're shopping for an imported office mono laser in Pakistan you will meet these four again and again: the HP LaserJet P2055dn, LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn, LaserJet Pro M402dne and LaserJet Pro M404dn. They are the same machine in spirit — a 33–38 ppm, duplex, networked desktop laser for small offices — released roughly four years apart. The differences are real but smaller than the price gaps suggest.

What actually changed between generations

  • P2055dn → M401dn: same engine speed, newer toner (80A), colour touchscreen, HP ePrint / mobile printing. The M401's screen is nice but one more thing to fail.
  • M401dn → M402dne: the big jump. Faster engine (38 ppm), first page out quicker, Gigabit Ethernet, 80,000 duty and the 26X cartridge — one of the cheapest per page in HP's range. The 'e' variant is functionally the same printer as the M402dn for day-to-day use.
  • M402dne → M404dn: evolutionary. Same speed and duty, newer controller, 59A/59X toner (with HP's anti-clone chip, so third-party cartridges must be chipped), better driver support on current Windows and macOS.

Which one should you buy?

For most small offices, freelancers and shops in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, the M402dne is the sweet spot: you get the fast engine, Gigabit and the cheapest toner of the four, for less than the M404dn. Pick the M404dn if you want the newest hardware, the longest remaining service life and the smoothest driver experience on modern PCs — it's the one we'd put in a new office. The M401dn and P2055dn are the budget picks: same duplex-and-network convenience, slightly slower, and their cartridges are the most widely refilled in Pakistan, so running cost is still excellent.

Whichever you choose, buy the X (high-yield) cartridge. A 26X or 59X costs more upfront but lands well under PKR 2 per page — see the full cartridge table in our HP toner guide.

What to check on a used unit

  • Page count — under ~50,000 on any of these is genuinely low for an 80k-a-month machine.
  • A full test page: no vertical lines (drum), no faded side (toner/transfer), no repeated marks (fuser).
  • Duplex run of 5+ pages without a jam, and a quick print from the network port.
  • Rollers — if pages feed crooked or double-feed, the pickup roller is worn. We replace these before listing.

All four are in our certified range with page count shown, tested and warrantied, Cash on Delivery. See them under office printers in Islamabad or browse all HP printers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HP M404dn better than the M402dn?

Slightly. Same 38 ppm speed and 80,000-page duty; the M404dn has a newer controller, better modern driver support and uses 59A/59X toner. For most buyers the M402dne offers nearly the same performance for less money and with cheaper 26X toner.

What is the difference between the HP M402dn and M402dne?

For everyday printing they're the same 38 ppm duplex network laser using 26A/26X toner. The 'e' was a channel variant with minor firmware and energy-setting differences; you won't notice a difference in use.

Is the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn still worth buying?

Yes, as a budget office printer. It's 33 ppm with duplex and Ethernet, and 80A/80X toner is cheap and widely refilled in Pakistan. It's slower than the M402/M404 but costs less.

Which HP LaserJet has the cheapest toner per page?

Among these four, the M402dne with a 26X (~9,000 pages) and the M404dn with a 59X (~10,000 pages). The enterprise M507/M608 go lower still with 89X/37Y cartridges.
