Epson EcoTank Ink Pad at End of Service Life: What It Means and What to Do
If your Epson EcoTank has suddenly stopped printing with two lights flashing, or your computer says 'A printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life', you are not alone — it is one of the most searched printer problems in Pakistan, because L-series printers are everywhere and many have printed for years. Here is what is happening and how to deal with it properly.
What the waste ink pad is
Each time an ink tank printer cleans its print head — at power-on, after a refill, and when you run a head cleaning — it pushes a little ink through the nozzles into a set of absorbent pads inside the base of the printer. Borderless photo printing also sprays ink past the paper edge into a pad. The printer counts how much ink it has flushed, and when the count says the pads are near full, it warns you and then stops, so ink can't overflow onto your desk. Frequent head cleanings and lots of borderless photos fill the pads sooner.
What the lights mean
| Model | Lights | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| L3210, L3250 | Ink and paper lights flash together | An ink pad is near or at the end of its service life |
| L3210, L3250 | Ink and paper lights flash alternately | The borderless-printing pad is near or at the end of its life — borderless printing stops |
| L3110 | Power and paper lights flash together | An ink pad is near or at the end of its service life |
| L3110 | Power and paper lights flash alternately | The borderless-printing pad is near or at the end of its life |
The L3150 and L1250 behave in a similar way; check the light-status page of your model's user guide on Epson's site. When the warning first appears, the computer may offer to continue, and pressing the B&W or Colour copy button carries on printing for a while — that is a warning period, not a fix.
The right fix: replace the pads, then reset
On the L3110, L3150, L3210, L3250 and L1250 the waste ink pads are inside the printer and Epson says they are not user-replaceable. Under warranty, Epson's authorised service replaces the pads or the printer. Out of warranty, a competent technician opens the base, replaces or cleans the pads (or fits an external waste-ink tube into a bottle), and then resets the counter. In Pakistan, ask the shop to show you the old pads; a job that only resets the counter takes five minutes and should cost much less than one that replaces the pads. Compare the price with a replacement printer using our repair or replace guide.
Why 'just reset it' is a bad idea
- The counter exists because the pads really are filling up. Resetting it without replacing them lets the next months of cleanings soak saturated pads, and ink can leak from the bottom of the printer onto furniture and into the electronics.
- The 'adjustment program' and 'resetter' files passed around on YouTube, Facebook and file-sharing sites are unofficial. Many ask you to switch off your antivirus — a common route for malware onto an office PC.
- Epson's own reset utilities are for specific regions and models, and Epson still recommends pad replacement by an authorised technician.
How to make the pads last longer
- Don't run head cleaning out of habit. Print a nozzle check first and clean only if lines are missing; each cleaning flushes ink into the pads.
- Print a page or two every week so the head doesn't dry and need repeated cleanings.
- Avoid borderless printing unless you need it; a thin white border costs nothing in pad life.
- Leave the printer on standby rather than switching it off at the wall every day — some ink tanks run a short cleaning cycle when switched on from the wall.
If you're replacing the printer
If your old L-series has also lost its head quality, a replacement can make more sense than a pad service. The Epson EcoTank L3210 is the USB all-in-one, the L3250 adds Wi-Fi, and the Canon PIXMA G2010 is the Canon alternative; differences are in our Epson L-series comparison. If you print mostly black text, a mono laser has no waste ink pads at all — see laser vs ink tank.
Before you take the printer in, write down the exact light pattern or copy the message from the computer screen. It tells the technician whether it is the main pad or the borderless pad — a different job.

Frequently asked questions
Why are both lights blinking on my Epson L3210 or L3250?
If the ink and paper lights flash together, an ink pad is near or at the end of its service life. If they flash alternately, the borderless-printing pad is. The printer needs the pads replaced and its counter reset.
Can I reset the Epson ink pad counter myself?
Unofficial resetter programs can reset the counter, but they don't empty the pads, so saturated pads can leak ink, and many downloads carry malware. The safe fix is pad replacement and reset by a technician.
Is the Epson waste ink pad user-replaceable?
Not on the L3110, L3150, L3210, L3250 and L1250 — the pads are inside the printer. Epson says they should be replaced by an authorised service provider.
How do I stop the ink pad filling up so fast?
Run head cleaning only when a nozzle check shows missing lines, print something every week so the head doesn't dry out, and avoid borderless printing unless you need it.
