Colour laser printers in Pakistan sit in an awkward spot: an ink tank is cheaper per colour page, a mono laser is cheaper for everything else, so a colour laser only makes sense for a specific job — sharp, dry, fast colour on ordinary paper, usually in an office. Buy the right one and it will run for a decade; buy the wrong one and four expensive cartridges will drain the budget. Colour laser or ink tank? Decide this first

If most of what you print is colour — photos, school projects, brochures on glossy paper — an ink tank like the HP Smart Tank 585 wins on cost per page and print quality on photos. A colour laser wins when colour is the minority: letterheads, charts in reports, logos on invoices, the occasional presentation. What a colour page really costs

A colour laser uses four cartridges — black, cyan, magenta, yellow — and a colour page draws on all four. On entry models each cartridge prints only 700–1,000 pages, so a full colour page can cost five to ten times a mono page. On enterprise models the cartridges print 10,000–20,000 pages and the per-page cost falls sharply. Best for home and occasional colour: HP Color Laser 150a

The HP Color Laser 150a is the cheapest brand-new colour laser you can buy in Pakistan and it is honest about what it is: 18 pages per minute in black but only 4 in colour, USB only, print only. For a home office or a small shop that prints a few colour pages a week — a logo on a quotation, a chart, a certificate — it is ideal, and it comes new with a warranty. It is not a printer for volume: its 117A cartridges are small, and at 4 ppm a 50-page colour job takes a quarter of an hour. The 150nw variant adds Wi-Fi if you need to print from phones.

Best value colour all-in-one: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277n (imported)

For a small office that needs colour printing plus scanning, copying and fax, a certified imported Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277n gives 18 ppm in both black and colour, a 50-sheet document feeder and Ethernet for a fraction of the price of a new equivalent. It uses the common 201A/201X cartridges, which are easy to source and refill locally. Note that the M277n does not have automatic duplex — that is the M277dw. If the budget is tighter, the older M276n does the same job at 14 ppm on 131A toners.

Best for a small office: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdn

The M281fdn is the one we recommend most for offices printing a few hundred colour pages a month: 21 ppm in black and colour, automatic duplex, a 50-sheet ADF, fax and Ethernet, on 202A/202X cartridges with a sensible high-yield option. Duplex matters more on colour printers than people expect, because colour reports and proposals are exactly the documents that run to many pages.

Best for volume: HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M653

When colour is a daily workload — marketing departments, design studios, print shops, schools printing colour worksheets — the Color LaserJet Enterprise M653 is a different class of machine: 60 ppm in black and colour, automatic duplex, Gigabit Ethernet and 655A/655X cartridges that print over ten thousand pages each, so the cost per colour page drops to a fraction of the entry models. Mistakes to avoid with colour lasers

• Buying an entry colour laser for volume. At 4 ppm and 700-page cartridges the 150a will frustrate an office within a month.
• Forgetting there are four cartridges. Budget for a full set, not one — and check whether the imported unit comes with usable toner.

• Ignoring the page count on an imported unit. Colour lasers have more wear parts (four drums or imaging units, a transfer belt) — check the page count and buy from someone who tests.
