How to Check a Printer's Page Count — and What Counts as Low

Every laser printer keeps a lifetime page count in its engine — the odometer. It's the single most useful number when buying a used printer, when selling one, or when deciding whether an old office machine is worth a repair. Dishonest sellers hide it; honest ones print it for you. Here's how to read it on any HP, in about a minute.

Models with a menu screen (M402, M404, M507, MFPs)

Go to Menu / Setup → Reports → Configuration Page (on touchscreens: Settings → Reports) and print it. The page count appears on the configuration page — listed as Page Count, Engine Cycles or Total Impressions. On MFPs the same report also shows scan and copy counts.

Models without a screen (107, 108, P2035, P1102-class)

Screenless HPs print their configuration page via a button hold. On most, press and hold the Resume/Cancel button (the one with the paper icon) until the ready light starts blinking — usually about 5 seconds — then release, and the printer prints its report. On the older P2035 it's the Go button held for around 5 seconds. The exact hold varies slightly by model; if one button doesn't do it, try the other, or use the browser method below.

The browser method (any network or Wi-Fi printer)

Every networked HP runs a built-in web page (the Embedded Web Server). Find the printer's IP address — it's on the configuration page, or in your router's device list, or in the HP Smart app — and type it into any browser on the same network. The status/usage page shows the page count without printing anything. The HP Smart app shows it too, under printer status/reports on many models.

What counts as low mileage?

Printer classMonthly dutyGenuinely lowStill fine
Entry home laser (107/108, P1102-class)~10,000under ~10,000up to ~30,000
Small office laser (P2035, P2055dn, M401)50,000under ~30,000up to ~100,000
Workgroup (M402dne, M404dn)80,000under ~50,000up to ~150,000
Enterprise (M507, M608, MFP M527)150,000–275,000under ~100,000several hundred thousand

Context matters more than the raw number: 40,000 pages is high for a home printer and barely run-in for an M608. Condition of the rollers, fuser and drum matters alongside the count — which is why our checklist in how to buy a used printer pairs the page count with a test print.

Buying used from anyone: ask them to print the configuration page in front of you. A seller who refuses, or whose 'page count' is a verbal claim, is telling you something. Every preowned printer we list shows its real count on the listing.

Can a page count be reset?

On most HP lasers the engine count is designed not to be user-resettable, but service tools exist and some sellers use them. Cross-check the number against physical wear: a '5,000-page' printer with a polished paper path, worn rubber rollers and a faded fuser has been around the block. When the number and the wear disagree, trust the wear — or buy from someone who guarantees the count in writing, as we do.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the page count on my HP LaserJet?

Print the configuration page: Menu/Setup → Reports → Configuration Page on models with a screen; on screenless models hold the Resume/Cancel button (about 5 seconds) until the ready light blinks. The report lists the lifetime page count.

How many pages is a lot for a used printer?

It depends on the class. Under 30,000 is low for a 50,000-duty office laser; under 50,000 is low for an M402/M404; enterprise machines are barely run-in at 100,000. For entry home lasers, look for under 10,000–30,000.

Can I see the page count without printing anything?

Yes — on a network or Wi-Fi printer, type the printer's IP address into a browser to open its built-in status page, or check the HP Smart app.

Can a printer's page count be reset or faked?

Service tools can alter it on some models, so cross-check against physical wear (rollers, paper path, fuser) and buy from a seller who prints the configuration page in front of you and guarantees the count.
