Wi-Fi vs LAN vs USB Printer: Which Connection Do You Actually Need?
'Wireless printer' is one of the most searched printer terms in Pakistan, and for a home it often is the right answer. But the question customers really mean is: 'Who needs to print, from what, and how reliably?' A printer's connection decides whether it drops off the network every time the router restarts, whether five PCs can share it, and whether your phone can print to it at all. Here is the practical difference between USB, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Ethernet.
The four connections at a glance
| Connection | Best for | Phone printing | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | One PC or laptop at one desk | No (except via a shared PC) | Excellent — nothing to drop |
| Wi-Fi | Homes, students, phones and laptops | Yes — HP Smart, AirPrint, Mopria | Good; can drop after router changes |
| Wi-Fi Direct | Phones with no router, shops, guests | Yes — connect to the printer directly | Good for one-off jobs |
| Ethernet (LAN) | Offices where several PCs share one printer | Yes, if the router also has Wi-Fi | Best — fixed address, no signal issues |
USB: simplest, and still the most reliable
A USB printer talks to one computer through a cable. There is nothing to configure and nothing to drop, which is why USB-only printers such as the HP LaserJet 1020, P2035 and 108a are still the cheapest. You can share a USB printer from that PC to others on Windows, but the host PC must be on for anyone to print. Buy USB when the printer lives next to one computer.
Wi-Fi: for homes and phones
A Wi-Fi printer joins your home router so phones, tablets and laptops print without cables — through the HP Smart app, Apple AirPrint on iPhones and iPads, or the Mopria / default print service on Android. It is the right choice for a family or students who print from phones. The catch: if the router is replaced or its password changes, the printer has to be reconnected, and a printer with a changing IP address can show 'offline'. Our Wi-Fi and phone printing guide walks through setup; good wireless options are the HP 108w, M211dw and Laser MFP 136w.
Wi-Fi Direct: printing with no router at all
Wi-Fi Direct makes the printer broadcast its own small network. A phone connects to it like any Wi-Fi network and prints, with no router in between. It is useful for shops where customers send documents from their phones, for guests, and when the internet is down. Most current HP wireless models, the Brother HL-1212W and the Epson EcoTank L3150 support it.
Ethernet (LAN): the office choice
A network printer plugs into the office switch or router with a cable and serves every PC at once, without depending on any one computer. It is faster for large jobs, never loses signal, and can be given a fixed IP address so it does not go 'offline' a month later. That is why every office and enterprise printer — P2055dn, M404dn, M507 — has Ethernet. More on the network printers page.
You do not need a Wi-Fi printer to print from a phone in an office. A LAN printer connected to your Wi-Fi router is on the same network as every phone on that Wi-Fi. Most network printers from the last decade appear automatically in Android's print menu and in HP Smart; iPhones need a printer that supports AirPrint.
What the letters in HP model names mean
| Letter | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| n | Network (Ethernet port) | LaserJet 1320n, M277n |
| w | Wireless (Wi-Fi) | 108w, P1102w, 136w |
| d | Automatic duplex (two-sided printing) | P2055dn, M404dn |
| f | Fax | M227fdn, 137fnw |
| dn / dw | Duplex plus network / duplex plus Wi-Fi | M404dn, M211dw |
| fnw | Fax, network and Wi-Fi | Laser MFP 137fnw, 139fnw |

Which should you choose?
- One computer, one desk → USB (cheapest).
- Home or students printing from phones → Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Direct.
- Office with several PCs → Ethernet; add Wi-Fi only if you want both.
- Office that also wants phone printing → a LAN printer on a Wi-Fi router, or a model with both, such as the Laser MFP 137fnw or Xerox WorkCentre 3325.
- Shop where customers print from their phones → Wi-Fi Direct.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Wi-Fi printer or a LAN printer better for an office?
A LAN (Ethernet) printer. It is faster for large jobs, does not drop off when the router changes, and can be given a fixed IP address so it does not go offline. Wi-Fi is better for homes and phone printing.
Can I print from my phone to a LAN printer?
Usually yes. If the printer is connected by cable to the same router your phone uses for Wi-Fi, it is on the same network; most network printers appear in Android's print menu and HP Smart, and AirPrint-capable models appear on iPhones.
What does 'dn' mean in an HP printer name?
d means automatic duplex (two-sided printing) and n means network (an Ethernet port). An HP LaserJet M404dn prints both sides automatically and connects to an office network by cable.
What is Wi-Fi Direct on a printer?
Wi-Fi Direct lets a phone or laptop connect straight to the printer's own Wi-Fi signal, without a router. It is useful for guests, shops and when the internet is down.
Can a USB printer be shared with other computers?
Yes, on Windows you can share it from the PC it is plugged into, but that PC must be switched on for others to print. For regular sharing, a network printer is more reliable.
