How to Connect an HP Printer to Wi-Fi and Print from Your Phone

Wireless is the single most-requested feature on home printers in Pakistan — everyone wants to print from their phone. The good news: on current HP models (LaserJet 107w, 108w, M107w, Laser MFP 135w/136w/137fnw, M141w, M211dw, Smart Tank 585) it's a 10-minute job with the free HP Smart app. Here's the reliable way to do it, plus the fixes for when it doesn't work.

Before you start

  • Your Wi-Fi must be 2.4 GHz. Most HP home printers don't join 5 GHz networks — if your router broadcasts both under one name, that's usually fine; if it's 5 GHz-only, enable 2.4 GHz.
  • Have the Wi-Fi password ready and keep your phone on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Place the printer within decent range of the router for setup; you can move it later.

Method 1 — HP Smart app (recommended)

  • Install HP Smart from the Play Store / App Store (or the Microsoft Store on Windows).
  • Put the printer in setup mode: on a brand-new printer it's already there (the Wi-Fi light blinks). On a printer that was set up before, hold the Wireless button until the Wi-Fi light starts blinking — on some models you hold Wireless and Cancel together for ~5 seconds.
  • Open HP Smart → Add Printer. The app finds the printer over Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, asks for your Wi-Fi password and connects it.
  • Once connected, the Wi-Fi light goes solid. Print a test page from the app.

Method 2 — WPS (no app, no password)

If your router has a WPS button: press WPS on the router, then within two minutes hold the Wireless button on the printer for ~3–5 seconds. The two pair automatically and the light goes solid. This is the quickest method for PTCL and other ISP routers that have the button.

Method 3 — Wi-Fi Direct (no router at all)

Every HP wireless printer broadcasts its own network ('DIRECT-xx-HP …'). Print the network summary page (hold the Wireless or Info button) to see the name and password, connect your phone to that network, and print. Ideal for a shop or hostel room without a router — the catch is your phone loses internet while connected to the printer.

Printing from your phone

  • Android: once the printer is on Wi-Fi, open any file → Share/Print → choose the HP printer. HP Smart also prints photos, PDFs and scans documents with the camera.
  • iPhone/iPad: AirPrint works out of the box on these models — Share → Print → select the printer.
  • Laptop: install HP Smart (Windows) or add the printer in System Settings (macOS); it appears automatically on the network.

Give the printer a fixed IP (DHCP reservation) in your router once it's connected. It stops the classic problem of the printer 'disappearing' after a power cut when the router hands out a new address.

Sharing a printer in a small office

For an office, an Ethernet (LAN) printer is more reliable than Wi-Fi: plug it into the router or switch and every PC finds it. That's why imported workgroup models like the HP LaserJet Pro M404dn and M402dne have Gigabit ports — see our office printer guide. The new HP Laser MFP 137fnw and 139fnw offer both Wi-Fi and LAN.

Fixing 'printer offline' or 'not found'

  • Restart the printer, then the router, then the phone/PC — in that order.
  • Check the Wi-Fi light is solid, not blinking. Blinking = not connected; re-run setup.
  • Changed your Wi-Fi name or password? The printer must be reconnected (Method 1 or 2).
  • Phone on mobile data or a guest network? It has to be on the same Wi-Fi as the printer.
  • Still stuck → restore network defaults on the printer (hold Wireless + Cancel ~5–10 s, or via the menu on models with a screen) and set up again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect my HP 107w / 108w to Wi-Fi?

Install the HP Smart app, put the printer in setup mode (Wi-Fi light blinking — hold the Wireless button if it isn't), then Add Printer in the app and enter your Wi-Fi password. Or press WPS on your router and hold the printer's Wireless button for a few seconds.

Why won't my HP printer connect to Wi-Fi?

Most often the network is 5 GHz-only (HP home printers need 2.4 GHz), the password was typed wrong, or the printer is out of range. Restore network defaults on the printer and set up again within range of the router.

Can I print from my phone without Wi-Fi?

Yes — use Wi-Fi Direct. The printer broadcasts its own network; connect your phone to it and print. No router needed.

Does AirPrint work with HP LaserJet printers?

Yes, current HP wireless models including the 107w/108w, 135w/136w, M141w, M211dw and Smart Tank 585 support AirPrint for iPhone and iPad.
