How Much Electricity Does a Printer Use?
With electricity bills where they are in Pakistan, it is a fair question. The short answer: for most homes and small offices, a printer adds very little to the bill — the bigger issue is the short bursts of high power a laser printer draws, which matter when you run it on a UPS, inverter or solar. Here is how to work out both.
Why laser printers use power in bursts
A laser printer bonds toner to paper with a heated fuser. While it warms up and prints, it draws several hundred watts — more on large enterprise machines. Once a job ends it drops to a 'ready' state of a few to a few tens of watts, and after some minutes into sleep, typically around 1–3 W. Ink tank and inkjet printers have no fuser, so they use only a small fraction of that even while printing.
| State | Desktop laser (typical) | Ink tank (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Printing / warming up | Several hundred watts | Around 10–20 W |
| Ready (idle) | A few to a few tens of watts | A few watts |
| Sleep | Around 1–3 W | Around 1 W |
For your exact model, check the spec sheet: HP lists power for active printing, ready and sleep, plus a Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC) figure in kWh per week — the most useful single number for estimating your bill.
Working out units per month
- Printing time: pages per month ÷ pages per minute. 1,000 pages on a 38 ppm printer is under half an hour of printing a month.
- Printing energy: printing hours × the printing watts ÷ 1,000 = kWh (units). Half an hour at 500 W is 0.25 units.
- Sleep energy: hours asleep × sleep watts ÷ 1,000. A month asleep at 2 W is about 1.4 units.
- Add them, then multiply by what you pay per unit on your bill.
For a home or small office, the total typically lands at a few units a month — less than a ceiling fan uses in a day or two. A print shop running an enterprise machine for hours a day uses more, so include electricity in its cost per page; our cost per page calculator covers toner and paper, and electricity is usually a small addition on top.
How to cut a printer's electricity use
- Keep sleep or auto-off enabled in the printer's settings or web page, with a short delay.
- Batch printing: one 20-page job warms the fuser once; twenty single pages may warm it repeatedly.
- Switch the printer off at its power button at the end of the day if nobody prints at night.
- Print double-sided — fewer sheets through the fuser. See how to print double-sided.
What it means for UPS, inverter and solar
Monthly units are small, but the peak is not. When the fuser heats up, a laser printer can draw a large current for a moment, which is why HP advises against running LaserJets from a small computer UPS. If you need backup power, use a pure sine-wave UPS or inverter rated well above the printer's rated power (on its label or spec sheet), and a surge-protected stabiliser. On solar, budget for that peak alongside fans and other loads. Ink tank printers are much easier to back up because they draw so little. More in our printer maintenance checklist.

Frequently asked questions
How many units does a printer use per month?
A home or small-office laser printer typically uses only a few units (kWh) a month, because it draws high power only while printing and very little in sleep. Use the TEC figure on the spec sheet, or printing time × printing watts plus sleep hours × sleep watts, for your own estimate.
Does a laser printer use more electricity than an ink tank?
Yes. A laser printer heats a fuser and draws several hundred watts while printing; an ink tank printer uses around 10–20 W. Over a month both are small for home use.
Can I run a laser printer on a UPS or inverter?
Use a pure sine-wave UPS or inverter rated well above the printer's rated power, with a surge-protected stabiliser. HP advises against small computer UPS units for LaserJets because of the fuser's high current when heating.
Should I switch off my printer when not in use?
Sleep mode already uses very little, around 1–3 W on most lasers. Switching off at the power button overnight saves a little more and is fine; use the button, not the wall switch, so the printer shuts down properly.
