Ask for the lifetime page count

Every laser printer tracks how many pages it has printed — think of it as the odometer. A reset or hidden page count is the biggest red flag. A reputable seller shows you the real number. Under ~20,000 pages on a typical office laser means lots of life left.

Test before you pay

• Print a full test page — check for streaks, faded patches or lines (worn drum/toner).
• Print 4–5 pages in a row to confirm the paper feed doesn't jam.
• Test connectivity you'll use — USB, Wi-Fi or network.
• On all-in-ones, run a scan and a copy too.

Watch for these red flags

• Seller won't let you test it before paying.
• No warranty of any kind — even 7 days.
• Vague answers about page count or condition.
• Price that's 'too good' for the model — often means a hidden fault.
