HP Printer Error Codes — What They Mean and What to Do
When an HP LaserJet stops with an error code, the number isn't random — it names the subsystem that failed. That means you can often tell from the code alone whether it's a 30-second fix, a cheap part, or a machine not worth repairing. Here are the codes we see most at our repair workshop in Rawalpindi, in plain English.
First, try the universal fix
Turn the printer off, unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds, plug it back in and turn it on. Many errors — especially 49 and anything that appeared mid-job — are one-off glitches caused by a corrupt print job or a power dip, and a cold restart clears them. If the code returns immediately or after the same action, read on.
The common numeric codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 13.xx | Paper jam (the digits say where) | Open every door and tray, remove all paper including small torn pieces, check with a torch. Repeated jams from the tray = worn pickup roller — a cheap part. |
| 10.xx | Supplies memory / cartridge chip error | Re-seat the toner cartridge. After a refill, this usually means the chip wasn't replaced or isn't compatible — see the toner guide. |
| 49.xx | Firmware crash — usually a corrupt print job | Cold restart, then clear the print queue on your PC before printing again. If one specific document always triggers it, re-save or print it as an image/PDF. |
| 50.x | Fuser error (not heating, or heating wrongly) | Cold restart once; if it returns, the fuser needs repair or replacement — a standard workshop job on office lasers, often not worth it on the cheapest home models. |
| 51 / 52 | Laser scanner assembly error | Restart; if persistent, the laser unit or its motor has failed — workshop repair. |
| 55.x | DC controller communication error | Restart; persistent 55 errors are board-level — get a quote before committing. |
| 57 / 58 | Fan or internal sensor fault | Check vents aren't blocked or full of dust; a failed fan is a cheap-ish part but needs opening the machine. |
| 59.x | Main motor error | Sometimes a jammed gear or obstruction; otherwise motor/drive repair at the workshop. |
| 79 / 79.xx | Formatter / firmware fault | Cold restart and try a different cable/network path. A recurring 79 often means the formatter board — repairable on enterprise models, borderline on small ones. |
No screen? Reading the blinking lights
Entry models like the HP Laser 107/108 and Laser MFP 135/136 have no display — they talk in LEDs. The exact patterns vary by model, but as a rule: a lit or blinking toner light means a cartridge problem (re-seat it, check the chip after refills); a blinking paper light means out of paper or a jam; both attention lights blinking together usually means an internal error that needs the full fix guide or a workshop look. The HP Smart app on your phone will usually spell out the actual error for these models — worth installing just for that.
Repair or replace? The honest maths
- Rollers, separation pads, chips, re-seats — cheap, always worth doing.
- Fuser on an office/enterprise laser (M402, M404, M507, M608, MFPs) — usually worth it; these machines have years of life.
- Fuser, laser unit or formatter on an entry home laser — get the quote first. If the repair approaches half the price of a certified imported office laser, replacing is smarter.
- Anything on a printer whose cartridge you already find expensive — replace, and pick the next machine by cost per page.

Frequently asked questions
What does error 50 mean on an HP printer?
A fuser error — the unit that bonds toner to paper isn't reaching or holding temperature. Cold-restart once (off, unplugged 60 seconds); if it returns, the fuser needs repair or replacement at a workshop.
How do I fix error 49 on an HP LaserJet?
Error 49 is a firmware crash, almost always caused by a corrupt print job. Turn the printer off, unplug for a minute, clear the print queue on your computer, then print again. If one document keeps triggering it, re-save it as a fresh PDF.
What does error 79 mean and is it worth fixing?
A formatter/firmware fault. Restart first; a recurring 79 usually points to the formatter board. On enterprise LaserJets a formatter repair is routine; on small home models compare the quote against replacing the printer.
Why does my HP printer show a cartridge error after a toner refill?
The cartridge chip counts pages and expires at its rated yield. Refilling adds toner but not a fresh chip — chipped families (107A, 110A, 150A, 136A, 59A) need the chip replaced too. Any good refill shop in Rawalpindi or Islamabad will do this.
