How to Print a Poster on Multiple A4 Pages
Every school term brings charts, maps and project posters, and a print shop charges for every large sheet. Any A4 printer can do the job instead: the poster is printed in tiles — four sheets for a 2×2 poster, nine for 3×3 — which you trim and join. Colour helps for charts, but a black-and-white laser is fine for maps, timelines and outlines your children will colour in.
Method 1: Adobe Acrobat Reader (works with any printer)
- Save or export the poster as a PDF. Word, PowerPoint and Canva all have Save as PDF or Download as PDF.
- Open it in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and press Ctrl+P.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, click Poster.
- Set Tile Scale. At 100%, an A3 page prints on two A4 sheets; raise it (for example to 200%) to make the poster bigger and use more sheets. The preview shows the grid.
- Set Overlap to about 1–2 cm (0.5 inch) so there is no gap when you join the sheets.
- Tick Cut marks and Labels. Labels print the row and column on each sheet, so you know which tile goes where.
- Print a test at small scale first to check the layout before using a lot of paper and ink.
Method 2: the printer driver's poster layout
Many Epson and Canon ink tank drivers have a poster or 'Poster Printing' layout in the Page Layout or Multi-Page settings, with options such as 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4. It works from any program, including photo viewers, so it suits a large photo. HP and other laser drivers vary — if yours has no poster option, use Acrobat.
Joining the pages neatly
- Trim one edge of each overlapping pair along the cut marks, not both — the untrimmed overlap is your glue area.
- Lay the sheets face down in order using the labels, then tape along the back seams; glue stick on the overlap gives a flatter finish.
- For a chart that will hang on a wall, stick the joined poster onto chart paper or a thin board.
- Every printer leaves an unprinted margin of a few millimetres; the overlap hides it. If text is missing at the edges, see printer cutting off edges — A4 vs Letter is the usual culprit.
| Poster grid | A4 sheets | Approximate finished size |
|---|---|---|
| 1×2 | 2 | About A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) |
| 2×2 | 4 | About A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) |
| 3×3 | 9 | About 60 × 85 cm |
| 4×4 | 16 | About A0 (84 × 119 cm) |
Sizes are approximate because the overlap and margins take up a little of each sheet. For thicker, brighter charts, use 100 gsm paper — our printer paper guide covers which weights each printer handles.
When is an A3 printer worth it?
If you print a poster once a term, tiling on an A4 printer is cheaper than any A3 machine. If an office, architect or school prints A3 drawings and timetables every week, an A3 printer saves time and joins — see A3 printer prices in Pakistan. For colour charts at home, an ink tank such as the Epson EcoTank L3250 or a colour laser such as the HP Color LaserJet Pro M251nw does the job.

Frequently asked questions
How do I print one image on multiple pages?
Save it as a PDF, open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader, press Ctrl+P, choose Poster under Page Sizing & Handling, set the tile scale and overlap, and tick cut marks and labels.
How many A4 sheets make an A2 poster?
Four A4 sheets in a 2×2 grid make roughly A2. Two make A3, and sixteen in a 4×4 grid make roughly A0.
Can I print a poster on a black and white printer?
Yes. Tile printing works on any printer. A mono laser is ideal for maps, timelines and outline charts; use an ink tank or colour laser for coloured charts.
Why is there a white gap between my poster pages?
Printers can't print right to the edge. Set an overlap of about 1–2 cm in the poster settings, then trim one edge along the cut marks so the next tile covers the margin.
